How to Install a Check-All® Flange Insert Check Valve

The Check-All® Flange Insert (F1, F6, FP) valves are the ultimate check valve in flanged systems. They provide the simplest and most economical way to install check valves in a piping system. The valve body helps position itself while bolts are being installed and tightened.

Check-All® Flange Insert valves are designed to fit between two mating ANSI flanges. Generally speaking, the FIV Class 150 and 300 valves (F1) are designed for standard schedule pipe with Class 150 or 300 flanges, and the FIV Class 600 (F6) valves are designed for schedule 80 pipe with Class 150, 300 or 600 flanges.

Check-All® Insert series valves such as the F1, F6, LP, UV, etc. are designed to use the existing pipe as part of the valve body. This provides a very cost effective solution for valve requirements. As such, part of the valve functions inside the existing pipe; therefore, dimensional clearance must be maintained for proper valve operation.

The Flange Insert valve can also be used as a low pressure relief valve or vacuum breaker by using the desired spring settings.

Check valves are employed throughout all types of fluid systems to prevent reverse flow. There are a number of styles or designs, each with attributes which determine its suitability for a particular application.

Check-All Valve is a USA manufacturer producing a broad selection of check valves for industrial use. Their EPIC™ series of poppet style valves deliver a number of solid features.

  • In-line spring loaded poppet type valve
  • Function in any flow orientation
  • Smooth contoured surfaces in flow path
  • Minimum change in flow direction through the valve
  • Minimized pressure drop
  • Complete drop-in replaceable insert for easy service
  • Quiet operation
  • Quick and smooth operation
The check valves are available in male and female pipe connections, as well as double ferrule and flared tube. The valves are suitable for liquid, gas or steam application with sizes ranging from 1/8" to 1-1/4".

Considerations When Applying Inline Spring-loaded Check Valves

1) Installation and Mounting

Inline, spring loaded check valves can be used in horizontal or vertical applications with proper spring selection. This is most evident in vertical flow down installations. The spring selected must be heavy enough to support the weight of the trim in addition to any column of liquid desired to be retained.

2) Elbow's, Tee's or other Flow Distorting Device's
Inline, spring loaded check valves are best suited for use with fully developed flow. Although there are many factors affecting the achievement of fully developed flow (such as media, pipe roughness, and velocity) usually 10 pipe diameters of straight pipe immediately upstream of the valve is sufficient. This is particularly important after flow distorting devices such as elbows, tees, centrifugal pumps, etc.

3) Valve Material Selection
There are many factors that influence the resistance of materials to corrosion, such as temperature, concentration, aeration, contaminants, and media interaction/reaction. Special attention must be paid to the process media and the atmosphere where inline check valves are applied. It is always recommended that an experienced application tech be consulted before installation.

4) Seat Material Selection
Several seat material options are available for inline, spring loaded check valves. An allowable leakage rate associated with the “metal-to-metal” as well as the PTFE o-ring seat, is 190 cc/min per inch of line size, when tested with air at 80 PSI. Resilient o-ring seats can provide a “bubble tight” shut-off (no visible leakage allowed at 80 PSI air).

5) Sizing and Spring Selection
It is very important to size check valves properly for optimum valve operation and service life. Sizing accuracy requires the valve be fully open, which occurs when the pressure drop across the valve reaches or exceeds three times the spring cracking pressure. Again, it is recommended that an experienced application tech be consulted for help with sizing.

6) Shock-Load Applications
Inline, spring loaded check valves are not designed for use in a shock-load environment, such as the discharge of a reciprocating air compressor. These types of applications produce excessive impact stresses which can adversely affect valve performance.

7) Fluid Quality
Inline, spring loaded check valves are best suited for clean liquids or gasses. Debris such as sand or fibers can prevent the valve from sealing properly or it can erode internal components or otherwise adversely affect valve travel. Any particles need to be filtered out before entering the valve.

Oil and Gas Wellhead Valves Meet Special Application Challenges

Industrial valves are manufactured in a huge array of configurations to accommodate the specialized needs of a broad range of industrial process applications. The oil and gas industry is but one segment of many throughout the industrial sphere that presents its own set of application specific criteria.

Oil and gas production, essentially pulling raw material from the earth, has unique valve performance challenges. Extreme pressure and abrasive or erosive material are common elements of oil and gas production at the wellhead. The valves also need to tolerate the range of outdoor temperatures at the production site. Safe and reliable operation throughout these and a range of other conditions are part of the design criteria for these valves. Here are some of the specific valve variants and configurations applied in the oil and gas industry at the production wellhead.

  • Slab Gate Valve - Provides metal to metal seal and employs parallel gate and seal with a preloaded means of assuring positive upstream and downstream seal. Full port design allows for pigging.
  • Expanding Gate Valve - A parallel expanding gate seals positively against both seats, which are protected from the flow medium in the open and closed positions.
  • Mud Gate Valve - Designed to provide positive closure under rigorous field conditions with abrasive media.
  • Adjustable Choke Valve - Designed to regulate production well flow and downstream pressure. Different trim configurations provide appropriate levels of control.
  • Needle Adjustable Choke Valve - Utilizes different trim arrangement than other types to provide good flow management, abrasion resistance, erosion resistance, and reliable service over a long life with low maintenance requirements.
  • Check Valve - Check valves of various types are utilized throughout practically all fluid flow operations, essentially anywhere that fluid is supposed to flow in only one direction. Oil and gas production presents some special conditions of abrasion, erosion, and pressure that call for special accommodation in design and materials of construction.
There are other specialty valves employed at or near the wellhead, but the key take away here is that oil and gas production generally cannot be accommodated by general purpose valves. Share your oil and gas production challenges with a valve specialist. The combination of your process and production field experience with their product expertise will produce effective solutions.
